Gernon Brown Playground

Spackman, Mossop & Michaels was contracted by the City of New Orleans to provide landscape architecture design for improvements adjacent to the Gernon Brown Recreation Center and contracted Batture, LLC as a subconsultant to provide Land Surveying services, Civil Engineering design, and Construction Administration in support of their design work for the outdoor play center. Civil Engineering  designs were created for concrete pavement including a jointing plan, typical details, written spec, etc as well as details for the fence and miscellaneous site furnishings and footings.

Batture began by providing survey services for the project in Spring of 2020 and concluded construction oversight in Spring of 2024. This project is now open to the public as of June 2024.

The New Orleans Recreation Department operates and maintains recreational facilities for the people of the city. It is commonly known by the acronym NORD. One such facility is the Gernon Brown Recreation Center. The playground, located outdoors on the grounds of the facility, is a new addition to the neighborhood, providing free and easy access for the public.

Because of the sites proximity to the levee and City Park, Batture and Spackman, Mossop & Michael’s had to work with both entities to make sure there were no objections to proposed designs.

It is located at the North west corner of Harrison Avenue & Marconi Drive adjacent to City Park.

For this project, Batture performed the following services:

  • Land Surveying
  • Civil Engineering Design
  • Construction Administration
